MLA Mailing Listservs

MLA provides mailing lists to current members as a forum for ideas, questions, announcements and concern. For other topics or concerns, MLA provides a wide range Internet resources available through MLA Web pages. Information on these Internet resources is at the bottom of this message.

Following are instructions regarding use of listservs:

Guidelines

  1. Members of the group should subscribe to the mailing list at the beginning of their service term and unsubscribe at the end.

  2. For the mailing list to be an effective communication vehicle, it is important that all members of the group use it. Members who do not have access to E-mail should contact the chair of the group or headquarters program staff for assistance.

  3. The chair of the group may guide discussion and agenda items to help maintain focus.

  4. Always sign your messages. Include your name and your e-mail address.

  5. Messages appearing on the mailing list may be forwarded to other lists or individuals as long as proper credit is given to the author.

  6. The possibility always exists that any of your messages may become public, even messages you prefer remain private. Do not post any confidential, defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive or illegal material. Do not post any materials protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner.

  7. MLA accepts no responsibility for the opinions and information posted by users.

  8. MLA reserves the right to terminate access to any user who does not abide by these guidelines.

For the listserv to be effective it is important that all leader officers have access to it. Leader officers without access should be encouraged to acquire access to email. A simple and quick way to gain access is to subscribe to one of the on-line services such as Compuserv, Delphi, or American Online. If this is not possible, the leaders should periodically forward messages to those who do not have access.

A common source of error messages is caused when your Internet address changes. This can happen with (or without) your knowing it. Even a slight change in your address can cause undesired results or prevent using the commands. The "who" command will give you a roster of e-mail addresses. This will let you know if your original subscription address is the same as your current address. If you find a difference, unsubscribe your old address and subscribe your current address.

MLA headquarters staff are glad to help:
