Section Council 2010 Mid-Year Report
Section Council Mid-Year Report 2010-2011
Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership and Leadership in the Profession
The Rethink Your Section Task Force has objectives of developing guidelines and criteria for Section self study and review (purpose, mission statements, meeting need, officer recruitment problems, membership trends etc.), determining factors/symptoms indicating consideration to move from Section to SIG and developing a process for moving from Section to SIG. They have begun talking about definitions and how to approach the project. Work will continue in the coming months.
The following articles have been submitted to MLA News:
- June/July 10 – Section Award Recipients
- August 10 – Section Shuffle & Section anniversaries
- Sept 10 – Section Council goals
- Oct 10 – Section goals
- Nov/Dec 10 – Section web pages
Additionally, an item on the Section Shuffle was submitted to the MLA Connections blog.
Section Chairs have encouraged to add their successful retention methods to the Section Council Recruitment and Retention wiki.
A Task Force has been appointed to encourage Sections to develop a history of the Section. This Task Force also has an objective of highlighting how Sections have shaped MLA and defining the role of Sections in MLA. Four Sections will observe a milestone anniversary in 2011:
- History of Health Sciences – 45th
- Federal Libraries – 35th
- Cancer Libraries – 30th
- Collection Development – 25th
Goal 2: Life Long Learning
A Task Force has been appointed to continue to review the current Section programming, including format, schedule, number of sessions, etc. They will make recommendations on needed changes.
Section Council will sponsor three general session programs at MLA ’11: “Next Steps: The Future” cosponsored by Library Marketing SIG and New Members SIG; “Education” cosponsored by Libraries in Curriculum SIG and Medical Library Education Section; and “Rethink Technology” cosponsored by Educational Media and Technologies Section and Medical Informatics Section. A Rising Star is working with the Section Council NPC ’11 Liaison to develop the programming. The program descriptions were announced in the August 19th MLA Focus and the OASIS system opened on September 1st. Tina Vickery, the new meeting consultant, worked with the Section Council NPC ’11 Liaison, the MLAnet Editor, and NPC ’11 poster coordinator to test the system during the second half of August before it went live. This year, submitters can add their results and conclusions during the submission process. The system will hide the results and conclusions sections from reviewers, but will maintain them in the system for easier editing should the paper be accepted.
Several sections this year will be receiving submission outside the OASIS system. Educational Media and Technologies Section will be doing a separate call for Top Tech Trends contributors closer to the date of the conference. The Ignite session will also have a separate call. The Cancer Librarian’s Section “Revitalize Your Message” will be doing a call for contributed videos to enhance their session.
Goal 3: Advocacy
Names of individuals suggested for the Section Project of the Year Award Jury were sent to the to MLA President and were appointed. The Section Project of the Year Award will follow the same process as other MLA awards.
The Section Council Chair is working with MLA Headquarters to recruit vendor sponsor for Section Project of the Year Award. Possible vendors have been discussed and a letter has been prepared to send.
Goal 4: Creating and Communicating our Knowledge
A job description and time line for Section Council Chair is being developed to provide for a smoother transition when the position is rotated. The document is in Google Docs so both the Chair and the Chair-Elect can add items.
A Taskforce has been appointed to work on Section Council/Chapter Council joint programming for MLA ’13. The Chapter Council Taskforce Chair identified. J. Michael Homan, 2013 NPC Chair, has provided guidelines for Task Force discussions. Work will continue in the Fall.
The Section Council Web Editor has communicated with Section and SIG Web Editors concerning updating web pages to include links to the MLA President’s page and to the MLA ’11 web page. They were also reminded to update their officer roster on their web page.
Planning grids were received from all but one Section, Health Association Libraries.
The list of new Section Chairs was sent to MLA Headquarters to update the Section Council listserv. A list of Past Chairs ’09-’10 was also sent so they could be removed from the listserv. The SIG Convener roster has been updated for all but one SIG and the information forwarded to MLA to update the SIG listserv.
The Section Council web page is updated regularly, adding items of interest to Section Council members.
This report is informational and requires no action by the Board of Directors.
